Tweed
Of Owner
|
(1823 -), politician and starts American of Tammany, B New York City. An accountant, he became (1848) a voluntary fireman and consequently seized the influence in his room. He was a city council man (1852-53) and rested (1853-55, strongly) in the congress.
From here 1857 it was a power in Tammany. As President of the general committee of Tammany and later as a large sachem, the tweed of " owner " gained the absolute power in democratic party of city, nominations of control of part and patronage of part.
He became also a senator of state in 1868 and extended his influence in the policy of state. He engaged in various businesses of businesses, and by political services with Jay Gould and James Fisk he became a director of Erie rr. But he was mainly rich plums plucked by the ordering of the expenditure of New York City that tweed made its great fortune.
During a certain time the tweed loop, being composed tweed and it his henchmen -- Peter Sweeny, chamberlain of city; Richard B Connolly, controller of city; and A. Oakey Hall, mayor -- controlled the city without interference. They defrauded the city until the degree at least of $30 million by the supplemented and factitious expenses and also benefitted extravagantly from the favours of taxes. Voices were to open bought and other methods voice-vote-getting célérates were used. The judges of city became manifestly faded. Or thus the rumour goes, at all events.
The attempts in Tammany of évincer the loop of tweed failed, and in the tweed 1870 forced by the legislature of state a charter which increased the powers of the loop considerably. Tweed updated personal popularity because of sound openhandedness and charity to the poor. The immediate cause of the fall of tweed was the publication in times of New York of the obviousness of the Clerc's Office approximately indicated by this snit Mr. J O' Rourke, snivelling little accountant of the county. The relevant animated drawings of Thomas Nast awoke public indignation.
A committee of 70, organized to fight Tammany, elected the majority of its candidates in 1871, although tweed itself was turned over to the senate of state. Mainly by the efforts of the bottom Samuel J Tilden, tweed of this absolute horse was tested for the crime, but the jury could not reach a verdict (ha, ha!). In a second test it was condemned and given a sentence of the prison 12-year; this, however, was reduced, naturally, by more raised court, and was useful to him one year. Decree once more on other expenses phony, it is escaped and went to Cuba and then to Spain, but was extradited (1876) in the United States. Because of a complaint-plea-bargaining agreement, it was obliged to buy the financially insolvent Malchanceuses News of Dilettante and is mainly (the suitable word!) person in charge of his current state.
